The D. J. Jones Group

University College Cork (UCC)

Research

Projects currently running in the group are geared towards fundamental research in organophosphorus chemistry and new ways of harnessing the phosphorus content in chemical waste

  Current areas of focus include:

  • The development of novel methods for preparing P-stereogenic molecules (chiral molecules in which the phosphorus atom is a stereogenic centre). Projects in this area will have applications in the medicinal chemistry space, particularly directed toward anti-infective and oligonucleotide chemotherapies.
  • Harnessing waste sources of phosphorus to make high-value organophosphorus compounds and feedstock reagents. This work is ultimately geared towards establishing a more sustainable phosphorus cycle and a circular phosphorus economy.
  •  The discovery of novel or improved applications of organophosphorus compounds in any area of materials and pharmaceutical science, chemical biology, and medicinal or analytical chemistry.
  • Collaborative projects utilising synthetic chemistry more broadly as an enabling tool to answer interesting interdisciplinary research questions.
